Promises in EVERY BOOK of the BIBLE

If you had the time to read yesterday's post you know that we were exploring the leadership challenges Joshua (the leader after Moses) faced as he divvied out the land to the tribes of Israel.

His allotment of the promised land to different tribes was met with varied responses. Some decided to keep the inhabitants that God commanded to be driven out of the land as slaves. Another tribe waited till they had enough strength to subdue the inhabitants and make them slaves. The final tribe in yesterday's post simply displayed fear and greed.

Despite all this, Joshua held his ground.

This is interesting because Caleb comes to Joshua to make what appear to be some brash requests regarding the land that he wants to have as an inheritance earlier in Joshua 14:6-15 (yesterday's post dealt with tribes Joshua 15-17 primarily). The sound coming from those who did not get what they pleaded for was: "We are too large and this place too small for us" AND "these people are too strong to drive out."

Joshua toes the line and doesn't give in.

Why then does Caleb get this response in Joshua 14:13 "Then Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb...for an inheritance."

Fear motivated many around Caleb and Joshua had to discern those who needed a little prodding from those who were ready. What made Caleb ready

  1. He reminded Joshua of the undisputed promise of God spoken over both he and Joshua. "You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me...Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance...because you have wholly followed the LORD my God" (Joshua 14:6 & 9)
  2. He highlighted the different effects of faithfulness versus faithlessness. "I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. 8 But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the LORD my God." (Joshua 14:7-8)
  3.  He WAITED on the Lord (45 years to be exact 😳) and BOLDY stepped into his inheritance. "..behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses... and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said." (Joshua 14:10 & 12)
